Abstract


Background: Diarhea in Indonesia is still the public health problem that ranks second after upper respiratory infection. In Sleman, diarhea is still a problem as the number is high and in the last several years there have been a big number of diarhea cases: 14.3% out of 24.2% diarhea cases among under-five in Sleman Regency were dysentry.

Objective: To find out risk factors of bloody diarhea cases among under-five-year-old children in Sleman Regency and to give suggestions for prevention.

Methods: This was an analytical study with case-control approach. There were 63 samples of bloody diarhea among under-five-year-old children who visited the Public Health Centers and 126 samples of the control group coming from 2 sources, i.e. 63 visitors of the Public Health Centers and 63 people in the neighboarhood as the control group. Data were obtained through interviews and direct observation from October 2002 until December 2002. Data analysis used Epi Info V. 2000 and SPSS ver. 9.0.

Results: Among 7 variables supposed to be the risk factors of bloody diarrhea in Sleman Regency; while 4 variables were significant statistically as risk factors.

Conclusion: The distance of drinking water source and faeces waste
