Abstract

Determinants of smoking behavior in male high school students in the Pariaman of city

Purpose

Although “no smoking” health education programs toward adolescents have been there, students who smoke are still high. This study examined the determining conditions that affect smoking among high school students in the  Pariaman of city.

Method

A total of 277 male students, from 7 high schools, filled out a questionnaire containing smoking determinants, grouped according to predisposing factors (knowledge of the dangers of smoking, attitudes towards smoking), enabling factors (availability of cigarettes, access to cigarettes, warnings of smoking in school and level of exposure to cigarette advertising), reinforcing factors (family members or peers who smoke).

Results

Positive or negative attitudes towards smoking, availability of cigarettes, access to cigarettes, level of exposure to cigarette advertisements and peers related to cigarette consumption of high school students. Students with a positive attitude toward smoking are 13 times more likely to consume cigarettes. The availability of cigarrettes had 4 times higher likelihood to smoke. Easy accessibility had 3 time higher likelihood to smoke. Students who are often exposed to cigarette advertisements are 1.7 times more likely to smoke, and students with peers who smoke are 5 times more likely to be smoking.

Conclusion

Positive attitude toward smoking has the stronggest influence on cigarette consumption in male high school students in Pariaman of city. Educators are challenged to implement creative school based activities to change the positif toward negative mindset to smoking. Support from stakeholder, community and family is also highly expected in term of restrictions, monitoring of smoking behavior in school students and various matters relating to smoking.
