Abstract

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Methylphenidate for reducing ADHD symptoms, remain have side effects that may preclude the use of this drug clinically. Methylphenidate work with a short duration and the plasma levels fluctuate throughout the day. Increasing the non compliance event. EEG biofeedback as an alternative therapy for ADHD is based on the finding that 80-90% of individuals with ADHD showed hypoarousal state in the frontal region, signed by excess of theta waves, beta waves deficiency in EEG examination. The concept of EEG biofeedback is normalize brain waves by train the patients to reduce the symptoms of ADHD by increasing beta waves and decreasing theta waves. This review found that EEG biofeedback has the same effect as a stimulant drug and can be used in combination with pharmacologic therapy and proven to have long-term effects to 6 months.
