Abstract
Background: Chronic exposure of alcohol inducesmassive degeneration of cells in the rat cerebellar cortex.
Objective: This study was performed to know the effect of chronic alcohol exposure on granule cells density
in the cerebellar cortex.Materials and Methods: Twenty 10-12 weeks old-male-Wistar’ rats were divided
randomly into four groups.Group I, the control group,was given aquadest 2mL/day.Each rats of group II, III, and
IV was given alcohol 3%, 12%, and 20% 2mL/day, respectively.After 30 days, rats were deeply anesthetized
with chloralhydrate 3,5 % before transcardial perfusion with fixative was conducted. Brains were then removed,
processed for paraffin embedding and toluidine blue staining. The average density of granule cellswas
counted in six random10.000 μm2 regions in the granule cell layer of anterior, posterior and flocculonodular lobes
ofmidline section of cerebellum.Results:The number of cerebellar granule cell per 10.000mm2were 354,1±14,1;
331,9±20,9 ; 297,7±10,2; 279,5±9,3 for group I, II, III, and IV respectively (F = 27,1; df = 3; p < 0,05). Conclusion:
Chronic alcohol exposure decreased the density of cerebellar granule cells in adultmale rat.
