Abstract

Association between plate waste at school lunch and nutritional status of 10-12-year-old students

Background:
Children aged 10-12 years are in a critical growth period and require adequate nutrient intake. High plate waste during school lunch may reduce daily nutrient fulfillment.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the association between plate waste from school lunch catering and the nutritional status of students aged 10-12 years old in Yogyakarta.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used purposive sampling to recruit 55 students from a private school in Yogyakarta city, based on the inclusion criteria of students aged 10-12 years who were willing to participate until the end of the study. The visual comstock method was used to estimate plate waste over five days in May 2025. Nutritional status was classified according to body mass index-for-age (BMI-for-age).

Results: The study showed that respondents' average plate waste was relatively low, with the lowest average staple food waste and animal-based side dish waste occurring on the fifth day (9.55% and 4.91%, respectively), and the lowest plant-based dish waste on the third day (17.18%). Among the respondents in this study, 60% had good or normal nutritional status. The Spearman correlation test showed significant relationships between staple food waste (p < 0.05) and animal-based side dish waste (p < 0.05) and respondents' nutritional status. However, there was no significant relationship between plant-based side dish waste and respondents' nutritional status (p=0.403).

Conclusions: Although there is a statistically significant association between staple food waste and animal-based side dish waste and the nutritional status of 10-12-year-old students, multiple factors influence nutritional status in school-aged children.
