Abstract

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gingival caused by bacterial plaque infection. Its management is by brushing teeth using a paste containing antibacterial ingredients. Honey and turmeric is a natural ingredient that contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. This study aimed to determine effect of using turmeric toothpaste, honey toothpaste and mix turmeric and honey toothpaste due to number of leukocyte in saliva and gingivitis in children.
Subjects consisted of 30 children with moderate gingivitis that divided into 3 groups, each consisting of 10 children. The first group was given honey toothpaste, 2nd turmeric extract toothpaste, and 3rd mixture of honey and turmeric extract toothpaste. The number of leukocytes saliva and gingival index on 1st, 3rd, and 7th ay was assessed.
Results of repeated two-way ANOVA showed significant differences leukocyte saliva and gingival index (p <0.05) by treatment group and day of observation. LSD test results showed there were significant differences number of leukocytes saliva between honey toothpaste group and turmeric toothpaste group (3rd day p = 0.000, 7th day p = 0.000) and between mixture honey and turmeric toothpaste group and turmeric toothpaste group (3rd day p = 0.000, 7th day p = 0.000). There were significant differences in gingival index between honey toothpaste group and turmeric toothpaste group (3rd day p = 0.000, 7th day p = 0.000) and between mixture honey and turmeric toothpaste group and turmeric toothpaste group (3rd day p = 0.000, 7th day p = 0.000). The conclusion of this study is the use of honey toothpaste and mixture honey and turmeric toothpaste are better than turmeric toothpaste to reduce the number of leukocytes saliva and gingival index in children gingivitis.
