Abstract

Antibacterial activity of NaOCl can improved by heated or by added surfactant, but heating is still debated as damaging its chemical structure. Enterococcus faecalis is bacteria which frequently found in root canal treatment failure. The aims of this
study was to evaluate the influence of temperature and surfactant to antibacterial activity of NaOCl against E. faecalis. The study divided to four groups: NaOCl 5.25% at 280C and 450C, NaOCl 5.25% with added surfactants at 280C, and 450C. Nine petri dish containing MHA, each contain four wells that represent four research groups. The entire petri dish inserted into the anaerobic jar, incubated for 24 hours at 370C, and measured the inhibitory zone . Two way Anova show the influence of temperature and surfactant to the antibacterial activity of NaOCl against E. faecalis.
Antibacterial activity of NaOCl 5.25% at 450C with added surfactant was greater than other groups. Antibacterial activity of NaOCl 5.25% with added surfactant is greater than 5.25% NaOCl without added surfactant at the same temperature. Antibacterial activity of NaOCl 5.25% at 450C was greater than NaOCl 5.25% at 280C, both in the group without added surfactant and with added surfactant.
