Abstract

Repaired acrylic denture should have adequate flexural and impact strength. Fiber and surface treatment ethyl acetate can be used to increase the strength of reparation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fiber material and ethyl acetate as surface treatment to flexural and impact strength of acrylic denture reparation.

This study used 25 samples of acrylic resin plate wtih size 65x10x2.5 mm and 30x5x1 mm for cavity to measure flexural strength and other 25 samples of acrylic resin plate with size 55x10x10 mm and 26x5x4 mm for cavity to measure impact strength. Each measurement divided into five groups, with five samples for each group. This groups consist of control group (without fiber and ethyl acetate), group with ramie addition, group with ramie addition and ethyl acetate as surface treatment, group with polyethylene fiber addition, group with polyethylene fiber addition and ethyl acetate as surface treatment. Flexural strength measured
with universal testing machine and impact strength measured with Charpy. The result analized with MANOVA followed by Least  Significant Difference (LSD) with 95% significancy.

The result showed that control group has the lowest flexural strength 71.11±3.41 MPa and impact strength 0.14±0.08 kJ/m2. Group with polyethylene fiber addition and ethyl acetate as surface treatment has the highest flexural strength 130.37±18.68 MPa and impact strength 1.15±0.09 kJ/m2. MANOVA showed there is significant difference of flexural and impact strength beacuse of fiber addition (p<0,05), no significant difference because of surface treatment ethyl acetate (p>0,05), and interaction between fiber and surface treatment doesn’t show any significant difference (p>0,05).

The conclusion of this study is fiber material increased the flexural and impact strength of acrylic denture reparation but surface treatment didn’t increase the flexural and impact strength.
