Abstract

Calcium hydroxide is widely used as a root canal dressing material because of its favorable alkalinizing effect. In particular,it will release hydroxyl ions which then diffuses into the dentin tubules and produce pH of more than 11. The aims of this study is to determine the effect of contact time of calcium hydroxide paste mixed with 2% of chlorhexidine digluconate, saline, and 2% of lidocaine HCl as a sterilization material on the dentin pH on the apical third of the root dentin.

Forty - five intact mandibular premolars were used in this study. All teeth were instrumented with crown – down technique using Protaper Rotary files and 6 mm of apical roots were cut horizontaly. All teeth were assigned randomly into 3 groups of 15 according to the contact time and the vehicle of calcium hydroxide. Group I 2% of chlorhexidine digluconate; group II saline; group III 2% of lidocaine HCl. After placement of the calcium hydroxide pastes on the root canals, they were sealed with caviton. Each group was placed in sealed bottles wrapped in moist cotton, and than kept in incubator at 370C with 100% humidity for 7, 14 and 28 days. After that the dentin was crushed into powder mixed with 3 ml aqua bidest andfinally the dentin pH was measured using a pH meter.

The results of this study showedthat thecontact time and type of vehicle of calcium hydroxide effectthe dentin Ph onthe apical third of the root dentin. The highest dentin pH value was seen in the application of calcium hydroxide paste – 2% of chlorhexidine digluconate for 28 days (11,34 ± 0,35), while the smallest pH value was seen on the application of calcium hydroxide paste - saline for 7 days (10,23 ± 0,09).Two-way ANAVA analysis demonstrated the contact time and type of vehicle of calcium hydroxide effect the dentin pH atapical third of the root dentin (p < 0,05),but there was no significant interaction between time contact and type vehicle of calcium hydroxide (p > 0,05). LSD analysis showed that most couples of the treatment groups were significantly different ( p < 0,05).
