Abstract

Background:Indirect restorations, such as those made of resin-based composites, are nowadays routinely bonded to tooth substrate via the use of resin cements. Resin cements are based upon the use of a total-etch or self-etch bonding agent prior to their application. Resin cements have established a reputation for their bonding effectiveness and, unfortunately, their technique-sensitivity. Self-adhesive resin cements, without the need for separate application of a bonding agent, were introduced to simplify the clinical steps and alleviate the sensibility of the previous technique comprising multiple steps. Currently, the most used resin cements are dualcured cements. Objective:The objective of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of a total-etch and a self-adhesive resin cements with and without light-curing to indirect resin composite restorations.

Methods:Forty intact maxillary first premolars were selected and randomly divided into two groups of 20. Resin cements in group A were not light-cured after cementation and those in group B were light-cured for 40 seconds after 5 minutes of cementation. Each group was further divided into two groups of 10; a total-etch resin cement in groups A1 and B1, and a self-adhesive resin cement in groups A2 and B2. The shear bond strength tests of the specimens were conducted with a universal testing machine after being stored in a 37ºC incubator for 24 hours and thermocycled. Statistical analyses of two-way ANOVA and LSD were employed (α=0.05).

Results:The results revealed that there were significant differences among the groups (B1>B2>A1>A2). Conclusions:It was concluded that a self-adhesive resin cement had lower shear bond strength than a total-etch resin cement. Furthermore, light-curing increased the shear bond strength of resin cements.
