Abstract
Angle class II division 1 malocclusion is a type of malocclusion which greatly affects facial appearance, with
characteristics: maxillary fi rst molar is more mesial compare to mandibular fi rst molar, protrusive maxillary anterior
teeth, and convex facial profi le. Begg technique offers a good mechanical system to treat Angle Class II division 1
malocclusion. Anterior retraction and posterior teeth mesial movement in Begg technique is expected to make the facial
profi le better. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between anterior retraction and posterior teeth
mesial movement towards change of hard tissue profi le.
Linear measurement adopted from Wendell Wylie method was used in this study, with Ptm perpendicular to
Frankfurt Horizontal as the reference line. Hard tissue profi le was measured as Downs’ angle of convexity, that is the
angle formed by the intersection of the NA - A.POG line. A sample of 14 patients were examined cephalometrically,
which inclusive criterias: Angle class II division 1 malocclusion, four fi rst premolars extraction, age 18-35 years old,
and had completely fi nished the orthodontic treatment performed by orthodontic resident of Faculty Dentistry, Gadjah
Mada University from 2000-2012.
The data obtained from pre and post treatment lateral sefalogram tracing was statistically analyzed by
correlation and regression analysis. The result showed no statistically signifi cant (p>0.05) correlation between anterior
teeth retraction and posterior teeth mesial movement towards change of hard tissue profi le. This conclusion is
hard tissue facial profi le was not related to anterior teeth retraction and posterior teeth mesialisation.
