Abstract

Back ground. Periodontitis is a destructive inflammatory disease in the tooth-supporting tissue caused by specific microorganisms, resulting in further damage to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with pocket
formation, gingival recession, or both. Inflammation resulting in endothelial dysfunction so that the balance between vasodilator and vasoconstrictor regulation disrupted and lead to hypertension. Scaling and root planing (SRP) has long been known to be very effective in the treatment of periodontal disease. The use of antibiotics is needed for patients who are not successful with SRP and treatment of periodontal disease in patients with systemic disease. The purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the administration of ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin after SRP in chronic periodontitis patients with hypertension seen from the parameter probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment level (CAL). Methods. The study was conducted on 20 patients with chronic periodontitis with hypertension, who were divided into two groups: SRP + ciprofloxacin and SRP+ amoxicillin. Measurement of PD, CAL and BOP performed before treatment and on day 9.
Results. Results of paired t-test analysis showed significant difference test value on PD decreased (p=0,042), CAL increased (p=0,002) and BOP decreased (p=0,035). Conclusion. The conclusion indicated that ciprofloxacin was more effective than amoxicillin on reducing PD,  BOP and improved the CAL in chronic periodontitis patients with hypertension.
