Abstract


The difference between upper and lower complete denture retention is a common condition. Retention of  lower complete denture tends to be weaker than upper. One of the ways to improve retention of the lower complete denture is the manufacturing of dental implant overdenture with retention system. Tipe of retention system most widely uses ball and bar attachment. The aim of the study was to analize retention of dental implant overdenture with ball and bar attachment in the equal geometry surface area.
This study used dental implant system ball and bar attachment with the same surface area planted in accrylic resin block with length of 35 mm, width 6 mm, and height 20 mm. Female metal housing and clip component planted in accrylic resin block in length of 35 mm, width 6 mm, and height 10 mm. The number of subject for each treatment group were 16 pieces. Retention strength test performed using universal testing machine and all data were analized with student-t test.
Based on statistical analysis and comparison of the average dental implant overdenture retention with ball and bar attachment, the ball attachment retention was greater than bar attachment (p < 0.05). It is concluded that in the equal geometry surface area, retention of dental implant overdenture with ball attachment is greater than the bar one.
