Abstract

Calcium hydroxide is commonly used intracanal medicaments. Calcium hydroxide residue found on the walls of the root canal will have a negative effect on the quality of obturation resulting in leakage and failure of root canal treatment, thus it must be
cleaned. This study was conducted to determine differences in the cleanliness of the apical third of the root canal wall of calcium hydroxide residue after irrigation with manual irrigation techniques, sonic and EndoVac.
This study uses 27 roots of premolar tooth with a length of 14 mm from the apex. All samples were prepared by the crowndown technique, using calcium hydroxide dressing by mixing with glycerin, then closed using zinc phosphate cement. The samples were stored into the bottle at 37 0 C in incubator for 7 days. The samples were divided into three groups: manual irrigation techniques, sonic and EndoVac. Teeth were split longitudinally. Samples were calculated using version 3 IMAGE RASTER program to determine the surface area of calcium hydroxide residual on the apical third in size ìm² and analyzed using one way ANOVA.
The results showed the differences of the three irrigation techniques to residual of calcium hydroxide in the apical third (p <0.05). Residual values of calcium hydroxide lowest in group II (sonic irrigation technique), followed by group III (EndoVac irrigation technique) and the last group I (manual irrigation technique). This study shows the manual irrigation techniques have the lowest ability to clean the calcium hydroxide in the apical third of the root canal walls than sonic and EndoVac, but EndoVac and sonic have the same ability.
