Milena Fischer is pursuing a master’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology and Art History at the University of Zurich, where she also completed her undergraduate studies in these fields. Her research focuses on the anthropology of sustainability, childhood, reproduction, and care, emphasising regional contexts in Europe and Southeast Asia, particularly in Switzerland and Indonesia. Milena’s bachelor’s thesis explored sustainable fisheries in Switzerland with a focus on multispecies entanglements. Her interest in anthropological explorations of sustainability deepened during her participation in a summer school at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2022, where she conducted collaborative fieldwork on environmental activism in rural Yogyakarta. Additionally, Milena has worked as a student assistant at the chair of Prof. Dr. Annuska Derks at the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies (ISEK) at the University of Zurich. She helped organise the Southeast Asia Meet-Up in 2023, aimed at promoting collaboration among scholars from various social science and humanities disciplines focused on the Southeast Asian region. Furthermore, she is currently a student tutor at the same institute, teaching undergraduate courses and providing mentorship for bachelor’s students. Milena was also a member of the student organisation team for the ethnographic film festival Regard Bleu 2025, which aims to celebrate visual anthropology and foster interdisciplinary dialogue.
