This image can affect the use of the school library. This study aims to identify and explain the representation of school libraries and librarians, alongside the stereotypes of school librarians in one of Indonesia's popular films, Mariposa.

Research Methods. Scenes were selected for observation and documentation to collect data on verbal and nonverbal element..

Data Analysis. The data were analyzed using Peirce’s triadic semiotic model, consisting of sign, object, and interpretant components which provides a systematic framework for elaborating how social perception and professional stereotypes are formed through representation.

Results. The school library was depicted as a place where characters interacted and developed relationships. It also became a place for students to study independently and in groups. In addition to conducting duties as information professionals, school librarians play a supporting role in the students’ social relations as library patrons. Stereotypes persist aroundto school librarians focusing on appearance and professionalism. Mariposa films feature positive and negative depictions of school library and librarians.

Conclusion. School library representation is depicted in positive light, while the portrayal of school librarian remains partly confined and persistent to the longstanding traditional stereotypes.
Nina Mayesti, Syifa Salsabila Putri Copyright (c) 2026 Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/20515 Tue, 31 Mar 2026 14:35:12 +0700 Dynamics of access and utilization of information on urban waste management by the community in Banjarmasin City https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/24687
Introduction. The closure of the Basirih landfill led to waste accumulation and the emergence of illegal dumpsites across Banjarmasin, where limited public access to policy information hindered effective waste management. This study examined how urban residents accessed information on waste management policy and how openness to information shaped behavioral change.

Research Methods. A qualitative exploratory case study was employed, involving 15 informants from five affected districts.

Data Analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically using the information grounds (IG) and diffusion of innovations (DOI) frameworks.

Results. Findings showed that residents accessed information predominantly through informal spaces rather than formal channels such as village office briefings or neighborhood meetings. Information openness influenced behavioral change when messages were delivered by credible sources, easy to understand, and reinforced by visible local examples. Behavioral change remained constrained by the absence of technical guidance, digital literacy gaps, and limited infrastructure.

Conclusion. In a waste management crisis, informal channels functioned as the primary information infrastructure through which formal policy was validated. The effectiveness of behavioral innovation diffusion depended on information openness and trust in local sources, not on the intensity of formal government outreach alone.
Najmi Fuady, Muhammad Iqbal, Sarifah Nur Isra Jairina, Mina Azahra, Annisa Aulia Nur Copyright (c) 2026 Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/24687 Tue, 31 Mar 2026 14:34:21 +0700 Ethical meaning and academic responsibility in Generative Artificial Intelligence policy in higher education https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/22005

Introduction. This study interprets policy texts on Generative AI in higher education through an ethical and existential lens, using a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach to explore how they cultivate critical awareness and ethical responsibility in AI use for learning.

Research Methods. The research uses Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach to analyze GenAI policy texts in higher education, revealing how the constructs that shape ethically oriented AI discourse.

Data Analysis. The data analyzed consist of policy texts on the use of GenAI in higher education. The analyses were conducted through thematic coding to identify the main topics, followed by hermeneutic interpretation to reveal the deeper meaning constructed by the texts within the context of ethics and education.

Result. The analysis revealed four key findings: the interpretation of GenAI as a learning aid, the emphasis on ethics and academic integrity, the tension between regulation and institutional autonomy, and the transformation of the lecturer-student relationship. Collectively, these findings indicate that GenAI policies cultivate a new awareness of the ethical use of technology within higher education institutions.

Conclusion. The GenAI policy is not merely a technical guide but a discourse that shapes the academic community’s ethical awareness, fostering a critical and responsible use through a hermeneutic-phenomenologicallens.
Fransiskus Xaverius Sabu, Taufik Asmiyanto Copyright (c) 2026 Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/22005 Tue, 24 Mar 2026 10:51:36 +0700 The influence of digital literacy and ChatGPT use on the critical thinking ability among library and information science students https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/26210
Introduction. This study, grounded in digital literacy theory, examines how students’ critical thinking abilities are shaped by digital competency and the use of generative AI in educational settings. The main objective is to determine how ChatGPT use and digital literacy together affect the development of critical thinking. The participants are the library and information science students, who are expected to demonstrate strong competencies in information technology and critical information evaluation.

Research Methods. This study employed a correlational design involving 106 third-semester students from the 2024 cohort. Responses were obtained using a 1–5 Likert-scale questionnaire.

Data Analysis. The data analysisinvolved multiple linear regression, Sobel mediation testing, and bootstrapping. Tests for validity, reliability, and classical assumptions were conducted, and heteroscedasticity was addressed using robust standard errors (HC3).

Results. The results highlight that digital literacy and ChatGPT use collectively accounted for 62.2% of the variance in critical thinking skills. ChatGPT use was the strongest predictor (β = 0.535) and partially mediated the relationship between digital literacy and critical thinking (indirect effect = 0.342; 95% CI = 0.192–0.455).

Conclusion. The study emphasized the importance of integrating digital literacy and ethical AI to enhance students’ critical thinking skills.
Saenal Abidin, Irni Izwah Abu Bakar, Irvan Muliyadi, Ismaya Ismaya, Fendy Fendy, Inawati Inawati Copyright (c) 2026 Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/26210 Tue, 24 Mar 2026 10:50:39 +0700 Online database acceptance and doctoral dissertation quality https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BIP/article/view/18962
Introduction: This study explores how postgraduate students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta use online databases to improve the quality of their doctoral dissertations. It examines perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and factors influencing students’ willingness to use online databases during dissertation preparation.

Research Methods: The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and document analysis involving 30 doctoral students.

Data Analysis: Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Matthew B.
