Abstract

Abstract
Balinese painting has undergone significant developments over time. The 1920s marked a turning point in the evolution of Balinese painting toward a “modern” style. This shift occurred due to the emergence of two Western painters who became patrons to artists in the Ubud, Batuan, and surrounding areas. This ultimately led to a fusion of the classical Kamasan style with Western influences. Additionally, the tools and techniques used in artistic production began to change. This fusion gave rise to a new style in Bali that became a trend in the 1930s. This article will focus on the interaction between Balinese and Western painters that led to the formation of the Pita Maha group. This group was highly successful, organizing exhibitions worldwide. Unfortunately, Pita Maha did not last long due to the outbreak of World War II, resulting in the cessation of its activities.
