Abstract
The arrival of Westerners in the archipelago was not always related to trade activities alone, but they also brought with them customs that were commonly practiced in their home countries. One of the customs of Europeans was a fondness for gathering, as seen in several European films set in the Middle Ages, where they often held dance parties for the nobility. This custom of gathering carried over to the Dutch East Indies, and over time, several European societies were established to revive their customs. One of these was the Societeit de Harmonie, which this article will discuss. The club has been active since the 19th century, where European elites gathered to party, celebrate, and watch performances. The Surakarta region is one of the areas where the Societeit de Harmonie club is located. It is situated in the Loji Wetan area, which is a European residential complex. The Societeit de Harmonie in Surakarta has a special connection with the king of the Kraton, adding a touch of diversity.
