Human–elephant conflict is increasing across Sumatra, but what is driving it? Subeno et al. (2025) provides an important answer by mapping the habitat suitability of Sumatran elephants in Rawa Bunder Resort, Way Kambas National Park.

Using field surveys and GIS-based spatial analysis, the researchers assessed key habitat requirements such as forest cover, vegetation, water availability, and environmental conditions. The results revealed that high-quality elephant habitat is becoming increasingly limited and fragmented, while large portions of the landscape consist of degraded shrublands and plantations that provide insufficient resources for elephants.

As suitable habitat shrinks, elephants are forced to move into agricultural and residential areas in search of food and water, increasing the likelihood of conflict with local communities. The study highlights the urgent need for habitat restoration and better landscape management to support elephant populations and reduce human–elephant encounters.

The research also emphasizes the critical role of lowland forests, which provide the dense vegetation, shade, and reliable water sources that elephants need for feeding, resting, and movement. Field evidence, including elephant tracks and dung, confirmed that these forested areas remain the most important habitats within the landscape. However, many of these habitats are isolated from one another, making it more difficult for elephants to move safely across the landscape.

Beyond identifying current habitat conditions, the study offers a practical roadmap for conservation action. By restoring degraded shrublands, planting elephant food species, improving habitat connectivity, and maintaining water availability, managers can expand suitable habitat and create safer movement corridors for elephants. Such efforts not only benefit elephant populations but also help protect local livelihoods by reducing the frequency of crop-raiding incidents and other human–elephant conflicts.

Key Findings

  1. Only 24% of surveyed areas were classified as suitable habitat for Sumatran elephants.
  2. Suitable habitat is concentrated in lowland forests, which occupy only a small portion of the landscape.
  3. 43% of the area was categorized as less suitable habitat, dominated by degraded shrublands and plantations.
  4. Limited access to food, cover, and water resources in degraded areas pushes elephants into human-dominated landscapes.
  5. Habitat suitability maps provide a practical conservation blueprint, helping managers identify priority areas for forest restoration, habitat enrichment, and connectivity improvement.

The findings demonstrate that conserving Sumatran elephants requires more than protecting the animals themselves—it requires protecting and restoring the habitats they depend on. By combining ecological research with spatial planning, this study provides valuable guidance for ensuring a future where elephants can thrive while coexisting more peacefully with surrounding communities.
