Meliau Hamlet: Revitalizing Indigenous Ecotourism in Danau Sentarum National Park

Hidden in the heart of Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan, Meliau Hamlet is home to the Dayak Iban people, a community rich in culture, wisdom, and deep ties to nature. With its lakes, rivers, hills, and pristine forests, this area holds tremendous potential for community-based ecotourism. But developing sustainable tourism is not without challenges.

A recent study reveals that while Meliau Hamlet has strong natural and cultural assets, it still struggles with limited infrastructure, financial management, and human resource capacity. Despite this, the community remains highly engaged from guides to cooks, boat drivers, homestay owners, and artisans.
