The process of “othering” in literary works has been widely researched. However, most the research on othering in literary works have focused more on group identities, such as race or religion. Othering process for people with disabilities are rarely discussed. The article written by Hervé Guibert entitled Des Aveugles (The Blind People) published in 1985, contains aspects about the life of people with visual disabilities. However, these people are positioned as actors who behave evilly in the novel. The author describes the characters with visual disabilities as people who are passionate and like to kill and finally they die at the end of the story. Female character also experiences a more tragic death than the male characters. This clarifies gender positions and hierarchies in the story. Therefore, this article attempts to examine the process of othering for people with disabilities related to gender hierarchies in the novel. The theory of subalternity is used as a lens to read the othering process. Meanwhile, the content analysis of the story is used as method of analysis.
Alvia Marata AzmieWening UdasmoroAprillia Firmonasari

This paper employed a dataset from the National Socio-economic Survey (SUSENAS) conducted in 2018, which contains approximately 45,000 observations of female-headed households in Indonesia. Welfare here is measured by expenditure per capita per month of the households. This study employed Propensity Score Matching to analyse the average effect of credit to expenditure while controlling confounding factors such as age, education, location, housing status, marriage status, housewife status, employment status, and household size. The result shows that the credit extension significantly affects the expenditure of female-headed households.
Gita Hayu Padma Juwita

https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/pswk/article/view/16619

The mental health of elderly women affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is important to consider and is aligned with the development goals of the SDGs. Delayed treatment will exacerbate mental health status, physical health, and the risk of suicide. This is combined with a decrease in socio-economic conditions that can trigger interpersonal tensions and lead to violence in elderly women. Various studies have shown an increase in violence against elderly women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The violence can lead to depression. This study aims to identify the relationship between violence and depression of elderly women post-pandemic COVID-19 in Purwobinangun, Sleman. The method used was cross-sectional study with a sample of 70 elderly women in Purwobinangun who did not have dementia and severe heart disease. Linear regression test was used by using SPSS 25.0 version. The results showed that the prevalence of depression in elderly women was 55.8%, accompanied by elderly women who experienced various types of violence in their daily lives. In addition, there is a significant relationship between violence and depression (p=0.000; t=9.316). Thus it can be concluded that, the more violence experienced, it can increase the condition of depression in elderly women in Purwobinangun, Sleman. Hence, relevant stakeholders should pay attention to the condition of depression and violence in elderly women as well as researchers should conduct new research using qualitative methods.
Sumarni DWWulan May Kusuma DewiAlfina Nur Rahmadani

https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/pswk/article/view/15811

The presence of Instagram as a photo and video sharing platform has enabled individual users to interact and exchange information easily anywhere and anytime. The various features owned by this platform also allow Instagram to become an instrument for users to achieve their goals and interests. However, in its development, accounts are often found that use the phrase 'beautiful' in choosing their account name. The use of the phrase 'beautiful' is then in line with the account's upload pattern which features various photos of women. This paper is intended to critically examine the potential for online gender-based violence on the @ugmcantik Instagram account, which features various uploads of women's photos. Using the concept of male gaze introduced by Laura Mulvey, this paper aims to explain how the process of objectification of women's bodies is displayed in the @ugmcantik Instagram account uploads that seem to be intended to fulfil the needs of male users' gazes. The methodology used in this paper is critical discourse analysis by examining the uploads of the @ugmcantik Instagram account which displays various photos, image captions, hashtags, and netizen comments related to the upload. The findings in this paper are that the @ugmcantik Instagram account in its upload pattern tends to make photos of women as objects of passive gaze and aesthetically packaged for the sake of increasing the reach and popularity of the account. The implications of using women's photos as objects can then be identified through comments that are sexist and demeaning to women.
Ammar Mahir Hilmi

Employing a qualitative approach, the research delves into the strategies implemented by the mall's internal team and insights from community partners and event organizers who have collaborated with the mall. The combination of internal and external perspectives provides a comprehensive view of the digital marketing efforts and the challenges faced in achieving SDG 5. The findings indicate that while Lagoon Avenue Mall has succeeded in targeting specific market segments and developing mall-based events, several areas require enhancement. https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/pswk/article/view/18045

Globalization has brought significant changes in various aspects of human life, including the representation of gender in advertisements. This study aims to critically analyze the representation of gender change in electronic advertisements using a qualitative method, analyzed through Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach. The advertisements chosen for analysis are “Segampang Itu Nyuci Noda Kalau Ada Proclin” and the Sunlight product advertisement featuring a man, “Wih kok bisa Sunlight sebagus ini!”. The analysis is carried out using the three dimensions of discourse analysis identified by Fairclough: text, discourse practice, and social practice. The analysis results show that the representation of gender change in these electronic advertisements indicates that both ads function not only as tools for product promotion but also as instruments for social change. These advertisements support the discourse of gender equality and have the potential to influence public perceptions of gender roles within the household. Thus, advertisements do not merely reflect social reality but can also shape and alter societal views regarding the division of gender roles.
Putri Meylina RizkiNur Shafira AgustinZulfatri RahmawatiVieronica Varbi SununiantiDeni Aries Kurniawan
