Generative AI Policy

The Indonesian Journal of Biotechnology (IJBiotech) is committed to upholding research integrity and publication ethics. In line with guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the journal provides the following policy regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in manuscript preparation.

AI and Authorship

Artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), or software tools cannot be listed as an author or co-author of a manuscript. Authorship requires substantial scholarly contribution, approval of the final manuscript, and accountability for all aspects of the work. As AI systems cannot assume responsibility or accountability, they do not meet authorship criteria.

Acceptable Use of AI Tools

AI tools may be used in a limited and responsible manner, such as for:

  • Language editing and grammar improvement
  • Formatting assistance
  • Data organization or coding support
  • Preliminary literature exploration

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, integrity, originality, and ethical compliance of their work. AI tools must not replace scientific reasoning, interpretation, or critical judgment.

Disclosure Requirement

Any use of AI tools in manuscript preparation must be transparently disclosed at submission. The disclosure should:

  • Identify the AI tool used (including version, if applicable)
  • Describe its purpose
  • Confirm that all AI-generated content was reviewed and verified by the authors

Failure to disclose significant AI use may constitute a breach of publication ethics.

AI-Generated Data and Images

AI-generated data presented as original research findings is not acceptable. AI-generated images or graphical elements must not misrepresent experimental results. Any AI-assisted visual content must be clearly disclosed. The journal may request raw data or supporting documentation during peer review.

Confidentiality and Editorial Oversight

Reviewers and editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts or confidential materials into AI systems, in order to protect author confidentiality and intellectual property rights.

The journal reserves the right to request clarification regarding AI use at any stage of review or publication. Non-compliance with this policy may result in rejection, retraction, or further action in accordance with COPE procedures.
