Abstract

Color changes that occur in dental restorations after bleaching reduces the aesthetic aspects of the restoration that requires the replacement of the new restoration. Such procedures require more reduction of dental hard tissue that is not in line with the principle of minimum intervention. Therefore, it is necessary to look for restorative materials that are more resistant to bleaching materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of color change in giomer and compomer after in office bleaching using hydrogen peroxide 40% based material.
Sixteen specimens giomer and sixteen specimens compomer disc-shaped 20 mm diameter and 2 mm thick immersed in artificial saliva and kept in an incubator for 24 hours. All specimens were then measured using the initial color by chromameter with
CIE L*a*b* system. All the specimens are then applied to materials made from hydrogen peroxide 40%. Specimens then soaked in artificial saliva for 24 hours. All specimens color were measured again and color differences between before and after application of bleaching materials have been calculated. The data were then analyzed the data using unpaired t test.
The results showed a mean change of color (ΔE) at giomer higher than the compomer. Unpaired t test results showed significant difference between the two groups (α < 0.05). The conclusion from this study is the bleaching material made from hydrogen peroxide 40% cause color changes in giomer higher than compomer.
