Abstract
Translating idioms presents a unique challenge in translation practice, as idioms often carry cultural meanings that cannot be transferred literally into the target language. This study focuses on the strategies used to translate Korean idioms (source language) into Indonesian (target language). The aim is to identify the strategy applied in translating idioms in the corpus, namely, Korean webtoon and its translation. The research question addressed is: What translation strategy is most dominantly used in rendering Korean idioms into Indonesian within the selected corpus? This study employs a quantitative approach to determine the most dominant strategy and a qualitative approach to illustrate examples of how these strategies are applied. The data analysis reveals that the equivalence strategy was used 50 times (55.5%), followed by literal translation (21 times or 23.3%), transposition (12 times or 13.3%), modulation (5 times or 5.5%), and adaptation (2 times or 2.2%). These findings indicate that the equivalence strategy is the most frequently employed in translating idioms from Korean to Indonesian, even though most translated expressions are not idiomatic. This tendency reflects the translator’s effort to convey the idiomatic meaning in a communicative and culturally appropriate manner in the target language.
