Abstract

For young adults, friendships remain a relevant personal relationship, even though various life transitions make it increasingly challenging to spend leisure time with friends. This article explores how young adults seek friendship experiences through Community-Based Open-Vacations (CBOV) in response to individualization in late modernity. The research was conducted through an eight-month ethnographic study (September 2023 – April 2024) focusing on two primary CBOVs, Sobat Healing (@kamisobathealing) and Besok Libur (@besoklibur.titik), along with three additional VTBKs: Jalan-Jalan Jajan (@_jalanjalanjajan), Sahabat Bermain (@sahabat_bermain), and Nyari Bandung (@nyari.bandung). Findings show CBOV fabricates young adults' need to spend leisure time with friends through the commodification of friendship experiences. In doing so, CBOVs attempt to position the ‘strangership’ among participants as a substitute for existing friendships. This connection, however, can only evolve into a ‘real’ friendship through socio-technical interactions on social media.
