Abstract
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that affects multiple aspects of patients’ lives, including physical, psychological, and social dimensions, thereby contributing to a decline in overall quality of life. Assessment of quality of life is therefore essential to provide a comprehensive description of patients’ conditions during hospitalization. This study aimed to describe the quality of life of hospitalized CKD patients based on the domains of the Kidney Disease Quality of Life‑36 (KDQOL‑36) at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Yogyakarta.
This research employed a quantitative observational approach using a prospective cross‑sectional design conducted between October and December 2025. A total of 70 hospitalized CKD patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. Quality of life data were collected using the KDQOL‑36 instrument, while patient characteristics were obtained from medical records and structured interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively to present the distribution of scores across each quality‑of‑life domain.
The findings demonstrated variations in scores among the KDQOL‑36 domains. The highest mean score was observed in the physical functioning domain, whereas the lowest mean score was identified in the role‑physical limitation domain. Other domains, including bodily pain, general health, social functioning, role‑emotional limitation, vitality, and mental health, were generally categorized at a moderate level. Overall, most patients were classified as having a moderate level of quality of life, with a smaller proportion categorized as having low or high quality of life. These results indicate that the physical dimension represents the most affected aspect of quality of life among hospitalized CKD patients. Consequently, a comprehensive care approach is required, encompassing physical symptom management, comorbidity management, as well as psychosocial support and patient education, in order to improve patients’ overall quality of life. Keywords
