Can Green Policy Make a Real Impact?
Posted on 2025-08-22An article from Jurnal Ilmu Kehutanan modeled land use change and carbon emission trends in Siak Regency, Riau, home to extensive peatlands and forest ecosystems. Despite implementing the Green Siak Policy since 2016, the article finds that from 2016 to 2023, carbon stock slightly declined, and annual emissions reached 1.4 MtCO₂e. By 2030, the regency is projected to achieve only 0.03% of its carbon reduction target.
🔍 The researchers used advanced tools like CA-Markov and the InVEST model to project land cover and estimate carbon dynamics.
🌿 While plantations helped sequester carbon, the loss of peat swamp forests continues to drive emissions. Urgent land management strategies are needed to close the gap between policy goals and real-world outcomes.
