Archive Digitization: Efforts to Save Family Archives from the Risk of Natural Disasters in Wedung District, Demak

Abstract

This article discusses the implementation of a community service program in the form of a family records digitization training held in Wedung Sub-district, Demak Regency, Central Java Province. The program was initiated in response to the region’s high vulnerability to natural disasters, particularly flooding. Flood disasters in the area have caused significant losses, including the damage or disappearance of vital family records. Family records contain crucial information and are closely tied to the identity and rights of individuals, especially in administrative and civil matters. Therefore, managing and safeguarding family records is of great importance. The digitization program was implemented as a preventive solution to protect family records from the impact of flood disasters. The program specifically targeted women through PKK groups, religious study groups, and local village officials. The training methods included observation, interactive material delivery on the importance of family records, introduction to digitization techniques, hands-on practice in digital archiving of family documents, and group discussions through Q&A sessions. The training program received positive responses from both village authorities and the local community. Participants demonstrated an increased ability to scan and securely store family records using digital storage platforms. The program effectively enhanced participants understanding of the importance of family records management, as well as their technical skills in digitization. The positive response from participants reflects the program’s success as a catalyst in fostering a more aware and proactive community in protecting their vital assets. Support from the village government also strengthened the sustainability of this initiative, making it a strategic foundation for building community resilience against disaster risks.
