Journal History

HISTORY OF JURNAL PEMIKIRAN SOSIOLOGI (JPS)

The initiative to produce the journal at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sicence, first came in 2010 proposed by then the Head of Department of Sociology, Prof. Dr. Heru Nugroho. He suggested that Department of Sociology should have its own publication following the reputation of the Department as a higher education institution that is well sound at the national and international level through various joint research and networks. Besides, the Department of Sociology has first class degree programs both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Taking account human resource qualities, the department strives to produce a high standard scientific journal which may contribute to enriching and expanding empirical and theoretical works on Sociological of Knowledge and Applicative Sociology. Nevertheless, the plan was realized in 2012 as it initially experienced financial limitations.

In 2012, two editions of the ”Jurnal Pemikiran Sosiologi” (JPS) Volume 1 were issued. The JPS Vol. 1 No. 1 edition was issued in printed version in May 2012, and the publication was led by Derajad S. Widhyharto, S.Sos, M.Si as the Chief Editor. The next edition JPS Vol. 2 No. 2 was issued in November 2012. This was followed by successful publications of Vol. 2 No. 1 and Vol. 2 No.2. Initially, the editorial board selected the scientific articles from UGM colleagues who reviewed social and humanities issues as well as from undergraduate and graduate students. Unfortunately, once again due to financial constraints, the journal was not published for two years (2014-2015). In other words, good intentions were met by technical constraints.

Since the government through the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education facilitated the publication of scientific journals through the Open Journal System (OJS), in addition to technical and financial support by UGM and the Department of Sociology, FISIPOL UGM, aspirations to revive the journal once again emerged. The Head of the Department of Sociology, FISIPOL UGM in 2016, Dr. Arie Sujito proclaimed his commitment to develop Sociology through applicative studies developed by research institutes and publications managed independently by the Department of Sociology. Then in 2016 JPS was published once again online. In the online publication, a change in the editorial board took place as the chief editor position was held by Dr. Phil. Arie Setyaningrum Pamungkas, M.A. Regular publication from JPS Vol 4 No 1 January 2017 and Vol 4 No 2 August 2017 also received positive response from academicians and observers of Sociological reviews, not only from within UGM but also from a number of academic institutions and research institutes focusing on Sociological and Social Humanities reviews throughout Indonesia.

Through the publication of JPS it is expected that the academic tradition especially in Sociology both Sociology of Knowledge and Applicative Sociology can be maintained as well as opening opportunities to enhance the capabilities of social scientiests, especially sociologists to increase the productivity of scientific works. It is further expected that JPS may meet the national accreditation standard so that it may support the vision and mission of UGM to become a research-based university so that in the future it may have better international reputation.
