This special issue of IKAT is linked to the ‘Rethinking the Social World in the 21st Century’ online symposium on Social Science 2020 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on August 24-25. This is a biennial international event organized by the Centre for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS), Universitas Gadjah Mada. The theme of this second symposium discusses how current social issues in Southeast Asia have shaped social science and how Southeast Asia social scholars should play their role in addressing those issues.

The journal especially seeks papers either delivered virtually at the symposium or submitted to the special issues.
