Abstract

This study investigated the pronunciation difficulties that English Language Teaching (ELT) students face with diphthongs, specifically focusing on how their native language influences these challenges. Diphthongs, which are complex vowel sounds involving a glide from one vowel to another within the same syllable, are particularly problematic for EFL learners whose native languages do not feature similar sounds. The research examined common mispronunciations, such as the substitution of diphthongs with monophthongs or the distortion of the smooth vowel transition. Data were collected through pronunciation tests, semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis to identify recurring errors and underlying causes. Findings indicate that factors like L1 interference, phonetic complexity, and limited exposure to native English speech contribute significantly to pronunciation errors. The study highlights the need for targeted instructional strategies to help students master diphthongs, ensuring clearer communication in spoken English.
