Submission Guidelines

JANUS welcomes the following types of submissions:

Research articles (5.000-7.000 words): These articles should make a substantial contribution to the study of the archaeology and the related fields in the context of Indonesian culture. They are typically based on empirical, library, or media data and utilize specific theoretical framework for analysis. Authors are also welcome to submit conceptual papers that engage with contemporary theoretical discussions in the fields of archaeology, museology, and cultural resource management covered by JANUS. Authors who wish to submit a research article should consult this guideline before doing so:

  1. Articles should be in form of essay which includes:
    • Title (max. 20 words).
    • Abstract (max. 150 words). The abstract should include a brief introduction, methods, findings, discussion, and research implications for both empirical and conceptual aspects. It should also include four to six keywords.
    • Introduction (without subsections). This section should include the background, objectives, and literature review/theoretical framework (if applicable) of the research).
    • Methods. This section should describe the research approach and methodology used in the study
    • Findings and discussion. This section should consist of the results and analysis of the study, presented in the form of subchapters
    • Conclusion. This section should provide a brief summary of the findings and discussion, strongly recommended to avoid simply repeating statements from previous sections. The conclusion should not be written in pointers.
    • References.
  2. Diacritics and Spelling of Proper Names
In order to be reproduced accurately in printed version, articles must be aware of any special (e.g., phonetic) symbols. They must be explained in detail with a typeset sample as well. Authors must be aware of the spelling of proper names, especially in terms of Indonesian personal names, newspapers, offices, and organizations. They have to be written as their original spelling although they might be now outdated, for example: Boechari, Hasan Djafar and Zoetmulder. Meanwhile, any geographical names should be written in their modern spellings.
  3. Figures, Tables and Maps
If your manuscript contains figures or tables, number the figures and tables consecutively, and refer to them in the text (Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1, Table 2, etc.). For all images (line drawings, photographs, maps), please use high resolution source files: min. 150 dpi for photographs, min 300 dpi for linework images. Please bear in mind that the images themselves should also be of high quality (e.g. the images should be clear and sharp and any text in the images should be sharp and legible). Give the caption and the source of the figure in the main text.
  4. Reference list format is based on APA (American Psychological Association) style 6th edition. The reference list should appear at the end of the article and includes only literature actually cited in the manuscripts. References are ordered alphabetically and chronologically. We strongly recommend authors to use reference tools, such as Mendeley, Zotero, Endnote, etc.

Book reviews (1.000 to 2.000 words): These reviews should discuss book(s) published within the last 5 years. JANUS in addition to publishing original articles, publishes book reviews which contribute to advancing the study of archaeology in the context of Indonesian culture. Authors who wish to submit a book review should consult this guideline before doing so:

  1. Reviews should be in the form of an essay. Please provide a brief summary of the book details at the beginning of your review.
  2. In reviewing book(s), please consider JANUS focus and scope. Ask how the book(s) contribute to the study of archaeology in Indonesia. Position the book in the context of relevant literature.
  3. While you are welcome to provide a book report style review (by providing chapter by chapter summaries), JANUS recommend reviewers to focus on the book purpose, content, method, and style. You should also comment the kind of readership suitable for the book(s) (e.g., introductory text or advanced; whether they are suitable for undergraduate students, etc).
  4. Review of single books should not exceed 1.000 words, while review for multiple books or an edited collection should be between 1.500-2.500 words.

Authors of JANUS must adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. The authorship should balance intellectual contributions to the conception, design, analysis, and writing of the article against other work in relation to the research. If there is no task that can reasonably be attributed to a particular individual, this individual should not be credited with the authorship.
  2. Authors must declare that the work reported is their own and that they are the copyright owner (or else have obtained the copyright owner's permission, including figures, tables and maps).
  3. Authors must declare that the submitted article and its essential content have not previously been published and are not being considered for publication elsewhere.
  4. The author should avoid disputes over attribution of academic credit. Therefore, it is helpful to decide early on who will be credited as corresponding author, contributors, and who will be acknowledged.
  5. Authors must take public responsibility for the content of their paper. It is unethical to submit an article to more than one journal concurrently.
  6. Any conflict of interest must be clearly stated.
  7. Authors must acknowledge the data sources of their research and should acknowledge financial support sources (fundings) to the research if any.
  8. All errors discovered in the article after submission must be quickly communicated to the Editor.
  9. Authors should state that the papers they submit have been approved by the relevant research ethics committee or institutional review board. If human participants were involved, article must be accompanied by a statement that the participants had signed informed consent forms.
  10. Authors should submit a short description of all contributions to their article. Each author's contribution should be described in brief. Authors of research papers should state whether they had complete access to the study data that support the publication. Contributors who do not qualify as authors should also be listed and their contribution described. This information should appear as an acknowledgment.
  11. Authors have a right to appeal editorial decisions.

Articles should be submitted in soft files using document format (.doc or .docx) to the Online Submission page
