Journal history

Berita Kedokteran Masyarakat (BKM) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal in the field of Public Health, established in 1985 by the Master of Public Health Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK), Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with the Association of Community Medical Doctors and Indonesian Public Health (PDK3MI).
Since its inception, BKM has originally published issues every four months. While the printed edition dates back to 1985, the online archives began with the
2003 editions, which were initially published entirely in Indonesian. The journal experienced a temporary hiatus from 2012 to 2015 due to a transition in journal management. However, in 2016 (Volume 32), BKM resumed publication and adjusted its frequency to 12 issues per year (monthly publication) to accommodate the growing volume of public health research.
To enhance global visibility and internationalization, BKM initiated a gradual transition by publishing English-language articles starting from
Volume 36 in 2020, steadily increasing the proportion of English manuscripts in subsequent volumes.

The journal's technical infrastructure and governance have continuously evolved to meet international publishing standards. BKM adopted the Open Journal Systems (OJS) in 2007 for end-to-end electronic manuscript management from submission to publication, and later secured its official e-ISSN (2614-8412) in 2018.
A major technical milestone was achieved in 2021, starting from
Volume 37, Number 2, when BKM migrated all editorial workflows and publications to a newly designed platform powered by OJS 3 (https://journal.ugm.ac.id/v3/BKM), while prior archives remained freely accessible on the OJS 2 platform (https://journal.ugm.ac.id/bkm).

BKM’s commitment to rigorous editorial standards is also reflected in its national accreditation milestones under the Science and Technology Index (SINTA). The journal achieved
SINTA 3 status in 2016 and, through continuous improvements in governance, editorial processes, and article quality, was elevated to SINTA 2 in 2021.

In recent years, BKM has implemented several key policy and format updates to align with dynamic electronic publishing standards and strengthen its visual identity:

  • Volume 38, Number 1 (2022): The journal adjusted its article header format to “BKM Public Health & Community Medicine (Berita Kedokteran Masyarakat),” to explicitly clarify its focus and scope to readers while increasing its appeal to international authors.
  • Volume 39, Number 1 (2023): BKM transitioned to an article-numbering system integrated with Digital Object Identifier (DOI) suffixes to ensure citation consistency and global compatibility with international electronic publishing standards.
  • Volume 42, Number 1 (2026): BKM reverted the official header name back to “Berita Kedokteran Masyarakat,” to strictly match the registered name on official ISSN documents (2614-8412). Concurrently, the journal introduced a refreshed visual identity featuring a prominent red and blue logo to solidify its academic branding.
  • Volume 42, Number 1 (2026): The journal enacted a comprehensive overhaul of its Author Guidelines to embed international best practices. The updated layout mandates explicit declarations regarding:
    Acknowledgments
    Authors’ Contributions
    Funding Statement
    Data Availability Statement
    Ethics Statement
    Conflicts of Interest
    Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

These progressive enhancements, alongside a steadfast commitment to rigorous statistical methodology and consistent empirical data, reflect BKM's dedication to publication integrity, operational transparency, and global reach as the journal prepares for indexing in reputable international databases, including Scopus.
